Kinloch Rannoch and Tummel

Rannoch Region

Kinloch Rannoch and Tummel

There is a place named Rannoch and another called Tummel in Canada. Rannoch and Tummel must have some of the very best scenery you will find anywhere in Scotland. The area has always been quite remote due to its terrain from early times, protecting it from the many changes of the modern world. The area boasts some superb Hotels, Guest Houses and Self Catering properties set in this special highland landscape.

Loch Rannoch has the popular Clan Trail, commemorating the clans that once lived here. It is reported that these clans were amongst the wildest and most unlawful in Scotland. It was a very difficult area to live, the inhabitants living in huts with stone walls five feet high, the summers were short and the soil was not good, often being wet and boggy. Cattle was the main form of farming. It is quite incredible to learn that the first school was established here in 1732.

The fabulous Rannoch and Tummel scenery starts with the popular Queens View, named after King Robert the Bruce's Queen, in the 14th century. The view is very popular attracting thousands of people each year. As you travel to Kinloch Rannoch you will see many great views, starting with those down Loch Tummel, Dunalastair Water to Schiehallion (the Fairy Mountain), before reaching Loch Rannoch.

Loch Rannoch offers a fabulous circular drive, all the more enjoyable if you stop at the series of markers, identifying spots of interest on the Rannoch Clan Trail.

Rannoch Moor lies further west beyond the end of Loch Rannoch, with the road terminating at Rannoch Station on the west Highland Line. Rannoch Moor very nearly defeated the builders of this railway line. Today you can catch trains to Fort William or catch the sleeper from London to Inverness here.

There is a famous song 'Road to the Isles' written about the fabulous scenery between Tummel and the Isles.

"Sure by Tummel and Loch Rannoch and Lochaber I will go
By heather tracks wi' heaven in their wiles".
