Exhibition - 150th anniversary of the Perth to Inverness Railway
Blair Castle Blair Atholl PH18 5TL
In 1863, the railway between Dunkeld and Inverness was completed opening the Highlands to increased visitors and trade. Engineer Joseph Mitchell attempted to get the proposal passed for almost 20 years but struggled to get support due to the common view that it would be too difficult to build a railway line across the rocky terrain of the Highlands.
The proposal was passed by parliament in 1861 and the railway line was completed only 2 years later on 9 September 1963.
The 6th Duke of Atholl and 7th Duke of Atholl were heavily involved in the process, as the railway line crossed a large proportion of Atholl Estates. The 6th Duke insisted on having beautifully-designed bridges across his land to cater for the new railway (the bridges that were built include the Bridge of Tilt, Killicrankie Viaduct and the Calvine bridge) and the 7th Duke took the first trial run on the line.
To celebrate the 150th anniversary, Blair Castle has a number of artefacts on display in the Banvie Hall relating to the development of the railway, including watercolours, old photos of Blair Atholl station and a model of a Stevenson design locomotive which featured on the Antiques Road Show in 2011. Exhibition - Maryann Ryves Colour and Texture in Highland Perthshire
Birnam Arts & Conference Centre Station Rd Birnam by Dunkeld PH8 0DS
Opening Saturday 6th April 2pm-4pm until Wednesday 1st May 10am-5pm
An Honours graduate in printed textile design, Maryann Ryves worked as a freelance textile designer exhibiting in Paris, Frankfurt and New York, and also sold to major retail companies, such as John Lewis and Next.
Moving then into painting, firstly with watercolours, but now principally working with oils, Maryann feels they more readily illustrate the vibrancy and diversity of the trees and landscapes, which are her inspiration.
In 2009 she became a member of the National Society in London, and in 2011, Maryann was elected a member of the Glasgow Society of Women Artists.
Her watercolours and oil paintings are in many private collections in the U.K. and Europe – Maryann also exhibits regularly throughout Scotland.

display to commemorate the 150 years of railway in Blair Atholl... visit the commemorative exhibition over weekends in May or daily from 1st June 2013 to 30th September 2013.
The 150th year anniversary of the opening of what at the outset was the Inverness & Perth Junction Railway is to be marked. It was a considerable engineering achievement to surmount Druimuachdar Pass, at 1,484ft the highest point on any main line in Britain.
On the 1st June 1863 the first section of the I&PJR was opened from Dunkeld to Pitlochry, on 3rd August 1863 the Forres-Aviemore section followed and on 9th September 1863 the Aviemore-Pitlochry section was completed, thereby forming the strategic main line across the Grampians.
From these dates, the growth of many villages as tourist venues and service centres can be traced. In 1865 the I&PJR became the Highland Railway which was in existence for almost 60 years. In 1923 it became part of the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS), and in 1948 British Railways took over at nationalisation. Tel 01796 481232

Karine Polwart 8:00pm
23 May 2013
Karine Polwart 8:00pm
Birnam Arts & Conference Centre Station Road Birnam Dunkeld PH8 0DS
Karine Polwart draws from folk music’s long tradition while keeping pace with the ceaselessly changing times. Her talent for crafting unique, enduring melodies, her gift for saying just enough without overstating her case, the range and dynamism of her arrangements, all come together in songs of powerful contemporary relevance. She also has the purest and most approachable of singing voices, drawing the listener towards her in the same way one might lean towards a late night tale by the fireside.
Her songs deal with humanity in all its many guises: there is tenderness, triumph and sorrow, raised flags of rebellion and independence, flashes of anger at power abused and misused. Perhaps most frequently she deals in spare, unsentimental empathy, often with those who have been dealt the least playable hands in the game of life.

Birnam Arts & Conference Centre Station Road Birnam Dunkeld PH8 0DS
Two friends, composers and songwriters - John Doan from Oregon, USA on harp guitar and Andy Lang from Germany on celtic harp, appear in concert together with a programme of atmospheric celtic music, straight from the heart:
John Doan is the father of the harp guitar: 30 years ago he reinvented this special baroque instrument, combining the advantages of the harp and the guitar, and set off a world wide phenomenon. John is also a talented and spirited storyteller!
Andy Lang on harp is variously referred to as Highlander and Music Magician back in his native Germany and his sensitive playing of the harp, and a serene atmospheric voice, creates an intense contact with the listener.
